Albany Update Volume 4 - January 16, 2004
AS a new legislative session begins, we would like to offer some “helpful hints” to those of you who are anticipating preparing for lobby days or meetings with government representatives in Albany this year. Bolton-St. Johns is committed to helping you make your visits to elected officials or their staffs a worthwhile endeavor and experience, as well as an efficient use of your time . In order to accomplish this, we suggest the following:
- Let our office know as far in advance as possible when you will be coming to Albany. Four to six weeks notice is needed to maximize the chances that we will be able to schedule an appointment with the person you wish to see. As a caveat, be aware that due to schedule changes or unannounced committee meetings, appointments are always subject to change, or even cancellation.
- If you know the party(ies) with whom you want to meet, please let us know. If you are unsure, please consult with the lobbyist with whom you are working and he or she will be happy to advise you concerning the appropriate legislators with whom you should meet.
- Please tell us the issue(s) or concern(s) you wish to discuss in the meeting.
- New security measures are in effect this year (see below), so please allow yourself sufficient time to pass through security checkpoints and still arrive at your first appointment on time.
- If you need to use a conference room, or to telecommunicate during your stay in Albany, our office will try to accommodate your needs. The earlier you let us know of your computer or space needs, the better the chance that we will be able to help you with these matters.
New Security Measures at the Capitol and Legislative Office Building:
- A picture ID is needed for each person entering the building(s)
- You will be required to pass through a metal detector
- There are new procedures and a coordinator (Melissa Cummings, (518) 455-5156) for those groups or organizations that will be bringing large groups or bus loads of people who will need to obtain security clearance before being allowed to attend meetings or rallies.
