Albany Update Volume 5 - March 18, 2005
Budget Update
Conference committees have been meeting all this week. Although progress has been made, there are no final resolutions. In addition, as a result of a recent Court of Appeals decision, there remain outstanding issues dealing with the constitutional constraints on the legislature to change programmatic language in the Governor’s budget proposal. Staffers will continue to work on budget details throughout this weekend. The Governor and the legislative leaders have agreed to meet 6:30 PM on Sunday night in order to continue budget discussions.
Legislators have been told that it is likely that budget negotiations will continue through Thursday of next week, at which time they will break for the Easter holiday. Ideally when they return to Albany on Tuesday the 29th, the legislators can begin passing budget bills.
